Strike cuts output at Canada's largest open-pit copper mine
One of North America's few large copper mines is running at reduced capacity. How long it lasts matters more than the headline.
What happened
Teck said on 24 October that strike action by United Steelworkers Local 7619 had begun at its Highland Valley Copper operations in British Columbia, a copper and molybdenum mine. The company said operations are continuing at reduced capacity, that the effect on overall production will depend on the duration of the labour action, and that contingency plans are in place for safety and environmental management.
More than 1,200 workers walked off the job after contract talks broke down, CBC News reported, describing Highland Valley as Canada's largest open-pit copper mine. The union cites wages, pensions and worker retention as key issues. The previous collective agreement expired on 30 September, according to Teck.
Our take
A short strike would barely register in a copper market that the ICSG expects to be in surplus for the next two years. A long one is a different story, because Highland Valley is one of the few large copper mines in North America, in a region the US is counting on for allied supply.
It also shows the point BNEF made last week: much of the risk to copper supply comes from existing operations, not just the lack of new mines. Labour, permits and ageing ore bodies can take tonnes out of the market with little warning.
Why it matters for AI infrastructure
Copper is the metal data-centre and grid build-outs depend on most heavily. Every tonne lost from a stable, allied jurisdiction makes North American buyers more reliant on concentrate and refined metal from regions with higher political risk.
Molybdenum, a by-product at Highland Valley, is used in high-strength steels for power and industrial equipment. It is a small market, so outages at a single mine can move prices.
What we're watching
- Resumption of talks between Teck and USW Local 7619
- Any Teck guidance change on 2026 copper and molybdenum output
- Concentrate deliveries to smelter customers
- Other North American mine labour contracts up for renewal
